Poor foolish Edward
Went out for a drink one night
Long but used
To being alone
And set to thinking
That he could only ever meet
An available woman
As asking a woman
In person yes
Has ever been
A sad hard doing

Not that it matters much
At the local drinking spot
Since there's usually a lack
Of single women
So he could enjoy the drink
Without the weight
Of there's a sweet single lass
Now get off your ass
And make yourself known to her

Only on this night in question
There actually was
A couple of lovely ladies
Not that they were there for the men
Or wanted their attention
That just happens

And Edward too
Made himself known
To one of the lovelies
But not as strongly as he could
With his little art
That isn't quite good
But ain't bad either
Only not as a man
Who wanted the woman
Even though he said
That two little figures
In the first of two drawings
That he gave to her
Thought she was lovely

See the truth but surely was
He looked weak
And stood not out
As a man she might want

So is it any wonder
That he's but like
It's only online
Where I stand a chance
Even if
It almost never works out
As his last date
Is years in the past
And it's a rarity
That he even gets a hey on back
As he's just flinging bottles
With messages inside
Into the ocean deep
With little hope
That anything will come of this

Days but passed
Yes after this
As he chided himself
For being weak
When he could have been
Yes quietly strong
And not been wrong
In taking her time up
In any unwanted way

And then they met again
On a quieter night
And actually talked a little
Which is but like
So bold of him
And it didn't even seem
The least bit awkward

But he quickly found out
That she'd met someone new
And was liking the way
That things were going
Not that he'd blown his chance
Because honestly
Any chance he would have had
Would have been slight indeed
And too unlikely
For him to think
That I should be direct

Yeah
The fear of the no
Is strong in him
And with good reason
Though it can also be
A self-fulfilling thing
Which sadly means
He's doomed to be alone
Unless and until
He meets a woman
Who has the will
To make a goodly play
For his affection
Which might as well be
A fantasy
Since it's never happened
In a flesh and blood meeting
And he's lost all his appeal
In the online space
As no one seems
To like his face

“Oh wow, that's good June. I'm happy for you.”

“Thanks Edward. It's very early, but I'm having fun and not thinking about Unrequited at all.” She said with a smile as she took a sip of her drink looking very happy with the way things were unfolding.

He smiled and took a sip of his own drink, truly happy for her, even though he'd have been happier if she'd wanted him but the odds of that were surely low and only lower when he didn't make it known that he'd have been delighted to have a date with her.

All of this to say
Seize the day
When you have a chance
Get on the floor and dance
Metaphorically speaking
Because the very worst
That can happen in the wake
Of being bold
And making your feelings known
Is you'll still be alone
Even if the no but rings
Yes loudly in your ears
You'll have tried at least
